I always say Right Things Done the Right Way Produce the Right Results.

Our 20-member volunteer Business Advisory Council provides oversight and guidance in program development and operations. They also assist us with Job Readiness Training by way of Department of Apprenticeship Standards Agreements (Under File #29710).

This group of secondary schools, community colleges, labor agencies, employers and industry representatives, is a consortium of companies, nonprofit associations, professional societies, STEAMM-related research & policy organizations, government entities, universities and academic institutions concerned with STEAMM education (SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING, ARTS, MUSIC, and MATH) and the future of human capital in the United States.

Together, we are committed to building career pathways leading to jobs in high-demand industries that offer “stackable” credentials (i.e., a sequence of credentials that can be accumulated over time). Members serve a minimum of 100 hours as guest speakers, work with participants on interview skills, provide Internships and hire participants to help achieve our mission.

Our Focus Counties are:

Alameda, Colusa, Contra Costa, Del Norte, Humboldt, Lake Trinity, Marin, Mendocino, Monterey, Napa, San Benito, San Francisco, San Luis Obispo, San Mateo County, Santa Barbara, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, Solano, Sonoma, Yolo. Focused counties noted above does not necessarily exclude counties outside of our initial pilot program initiatives.

We Support/Create initiatives to enable school and educational systems to implement innovative teaching practices in science, technology, engineering, arts, music, and mathematics (STEAMM).

We prepare students for bay area jobs requiring knowledge of advanced 5G wireless network systems and are responsible for evangelizing Cisco Meraki through our world-class CMNA technical certification course and customized technical engagement program at the school called CityLab.

Reducing Recidivism and Foster Care

Our Social Motive is giving incarcerated fathers a vision that they have a unique and irreplaceable role in the life of their child along with increased confidence and changes in attitude and skills is a powerful motivator for successful reentry into a community.

And a strong reinforcer for the child seeking academic success, combined with the creative financing described above, we organically empower communities to bring families together in a dignified way.

Backers provide money to pay for education, training, and equipment (such as tools), offer advice, encouragement, and connections.

Interested parties can participate in General Sessions each third weekend, or request a private 12-week program through a Memorandum of Understanding.

CityLab founder, Johnny Clarke works with venture-funded startups to implement SuperSaturday, MakeIT TakeIT, Re-Innovations, and Coffee Trike Coffee.




Our Story

CityLab is pleased to announce Summer of STEAMM, a program for underserved youth ages 18 to 24 towards meet some key prerequisites to computer network certification, while preparing for a Regional Tech Competition this fall.

The program officially starts in June of 2017, although small cohorts of 6 to 12 may start as early as April 16 for the ongoing weekend and evening series.

CityLab is a workforce development program offering a variety of services to eligible job seekers through regional TechShops’ across the United States.

A hands-on, culturally relevant variation of the CISCO Academy IT Essentials coursework, CityLab is accredited by various local education agencies.

The program consists of project-based learning with a California state-certified apprenticeship program for select students who show success during the coursework.

CityLab is the only CISCO Academy provider in California coupled with a certified apprenticeship to help its students immediately apply their new skills with a paying employer.

By design, CityLab moves previously unskilled learners of all ages through both the conceptual and hands-on learning path of the IT Essentials coursework and into a paying job.

Because it is held in the “maker” focused environment of The TechShop, students of CityLab are introduced to many different applications of the coursework.

TechShop serves as a veritable laboratory of design, art, manufacturing, music, and entrepreneurship: hence the name, CityLab.

The TechShop provides a concentrated environment of the Internet of Everything, an ideal theater in which students can experiment with and perform their new skills.

CityLab then takes select students out into the “real-world” through apprenticeships: business environments where students can apply their new skills outside of the TechShop laboratory and get paid.

It’s not quite immediate gratification for young students, but it does enable students to connect their learning to earning, providing them with their first taste of a new, professional identity.

CityLab mentors help formerly disenfranchised students (either because of ethnic or economic disparities, or having been caught up in the legal system) experience success with their skills and to internalize a new set of values.

Together, students propel themselves out of old habits of mind, out of economics of poverty, and into a newly enfranchised status in they can participate in the global economy of today’s and tomorrow’s technology.

Our Story

CityLab sprung to life three years ago from the Maximum Balance Foundation’s effort to reduce recidivism in the San Francisco City and County jail system by teaching CISCO’s IT Essentials course to incarcerated veterans.

At that time, the program focused specifically on first-time offenders who were also U.S. military service veterans. The initial program’s success has led to a wider application of related programs in the San Francisco Bay Area, including our newly announced youth program.

Like the program before it, this program is open to all youth of any background. However, we strongly encourage young people of color and that previously were incarcerated to participate.

Career assessment, coaching, job readiness workshops, and enrollment are offered as part of CityLab’ s advanced certification technical CISCO Systems training program, of which Summer of STEAM is a prerequisite. During the entire enrollment period, students are given access to advanced technical training tools as well as the opportunity to earn wages through part- time work related to specific career path goals.

The purpose is not to recreate the wheel, rather create a well-organized platform that has relational, peer to peer capabilities, that can measure and evaluate the positive effects on investing to reduce recidivism by 1%.
Current training services are mapped to 2016 Bright Outlook Career Fields according to the California Secretary of State Infomation Website.
